Over 50 Animals Rescued from Severe Neglect in Rio Verde—Zebra, Camels, and Exotic Wildlife Among Survivors

Rio Verde, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — In a disturbing case of extreme animal cruelty, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO)—alongside its Animal Crimes and MASH Units—executed a major seizure operation today at a rural property in Rio Verde, rescuing more than 50 animals found living in appalling and life-threatening conditions.

The animals rescued ranged from farm animals to exotic wildlife, including horses, rams, goats, camels, sheep, tortoises, peacocks, a cockatoo, a bull, and even a zebra.

🚨 Photos obtained by iSkyNews.com courtesy of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, paint a haunting picture of the suffering endured:

  • Two horses were found desperately searching for water inside a dry trough, their ribs visibly protruding.

  • white cockatoo, isolated in a barren and overgrown cage, perched in silence beneath a canopy of twisted branches.

  • A blue water trough revealed algae-infested sludge—one of the few water sources on the property, clearly undrinkable.

  • Multiple horses appeared emaciated and frail, standing in scorched dirt paddocks without shade, food, or adequate hydration.

  • A young zebra stood beside a horse in a small pen while deputies from the MCSO Animal Crimes Unit delivered buckets of fresh water—its striped coat sun-bleached and dull.

  • A separate photo shows a horse in a confined stall, its skeletal frame outlined by sunlight streaking through the gate—discarded trash strewn across the floor.

  • Exotic rams, visibly neglected and suffering from untreated skin conditions, were confined to overcrowded enclosures alongside a bull and peacocks.

  • The Rural Metro Fire Department responded heroically, delivering over 2,000 gallons of fresh water, bringing immediate relief to the suffering animals.

📸 One especially telling photo shows Sheriff Sheridan personally pouring water for a horse and zebra, both crowding the gate with desperate thirst. Sheriff Sheridan, who assisted on scene, stated:

“Today is a powerful reminder that neglect will not be ignored. Every life matters. We will always fight for those who can’t speak for themselves.”

Animals were found with no access to fresh food or clean water, many kept in unsanitary, sun-exposed pens filled with waste. Several animals were dehydrated and malnourished, and conditions suggest long-term, systemic neglect.

The MCSO MASH Unit, which specializes in the rehabilitation of abused animals, has taken custody of the seized animals. Veterinary evaluations are ongoing, and many of the animals face a long road to recovery.

The investigation remains active, and charges are expected pending further review.

⚖️ Justice for the voiceless is underway, and authorities are urging the public to report any signs of animal neglect or cruelty in their communities.
