Vehicle Fire Shuts Down Area Near Banning Street and Ray Road in Gilbert

GILBERT, Ariz. — A vehicle fire sent thick smoke into the air and temporarily shut down part of the area near Banning Street and Ray Road in Gilbert Friday evening as firefighters worked quickly to bring the flames under control.
Gilbert Police and Gilbert Fire & Rescue were called to the intersection just after 7:05 p.m. on September 18 following reports of a vehicle on fire.
When emergency crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and visible flames coming from the vehicle’s engine compartment.
Firefighters immediately began working to contain the fire and had the flames extinguished within approximately 10 minutes of the initial 911 call.
One person was evaluated by medical personnel at the scene. No additional injuries were reported.
The fire prompted temporary traffic restrictions around Banning Street and Ray Road while firefighters extinguished the vehicle and crews worked to make sure the surrounding roadway was safe.
Roads around the scene remained blocked as crews continued clearing the area Friday evening.
Drivers traveling through the area should use caution, expect possible delays and consider an alternate route until the roadway is fully reopened.
The cause of the vehicle fire was not immediately available.
