Man Flees Mesa Traffic Stop, Jumps Wall and Hides in Backyard, Police Say

MESA, Ariz. — A traffic stop in Mesa turned into a short foot pursuit Friday night after police say a man ran from officers, jumped a wall and tried to hide in a residential backyard.

According to a statement from Mesa Police Detective L. Cervantes, officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop just after 8:15 p.m. on September 18 near 63rd Street and Main Street.

Police say the person officers were trying to contact got out and fled on foot.

Investigators say he jumped a wall into the backyard of a nearby home and attempted to hide from officers.

Officers were eventually able to locate the man and take him into custody without any reported threat to the surrounding community.

Mesa Police said the investigation was still underway Thursday night, and it was not yet clear whether the man would be formally arrested or what charges, if any, could be filed.

Police emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
