Serious Two-Vehicle Accident Shuts Down Major Mesa Intersection; One Critical, One Flees Scene

Mesa, AZ – A severe two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Mesa Drive and Southern Avenue around 12:40 p.m. today, May 27, 2025, has resulted in major traffic disruptions and left one individual in critical condition. Another person involved in the crash reportedly fled the scene on foot before being apprehended by police.

According to Mesa Fire & Medical Department, emergency crews arrived to find a dramatic scene with one vehicle flipped onto its side and a second vehicle on fire, which was later clarified as smoking heavily from under the hood.

As firefighters worked to manage the hazards, medical personnel began triaging patients. During this process, one individual involved in the collision took off running from the scene. Mesa Fire & Medical immediately alerted Mesa Police, who were able to locate and detain the fleeing person. This individual was subsequently triaged as a Delayed Trauma Patient. The other patient from the accident was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The crash has led to significant road closures in the area. Both northbound and southbound lanes of Mesa Drive were shut down. Additionally, eastbound Southern Avenue at Mesa Drive was closed, and southbound Mesa Drive at Southern Avenue was also blocked to traffic.

Later in the afternoon, police tape was erected around the collision site, and the Mesa Police Forensics Crime Scene Unit arrived to conduct an investigation.

Authorities have indicated that this is preliminary information, and there is a possibility the accident may be upgraded to a fatal incident.
