Driver Arrested After Allegedly Playing ‘Lunatic’ Wrong-Way Driving Game on I-40 Near Winslow

WINSLOW, Ariz. — An Arizona driver was arrested after allegedly intentionally driving the wrong way on Interstate 40 as part of a dangerous game he called “Lunatic,” according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The incident happened on Sept. 20, 2026, when multiple people called 911 to report an SUV traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the State Route 99 interchange outside Winslow.
According to AZDPS, the vehicle continued traveling against traffic, creating a serious hazard for motorists on the interstate.
Arizona Highway Patrol troopers located the SUV and safely intercepted it before anyone was injured.
During the investigation, the driver allegedly told troopers he was participating in a game called “Lunatic” with two other unidentified people, where participants intentionally drive the wrong way on highways or interstates.
The driver reportedly told investigators he was acting as the “supervisor” of the game because he was older than the other participants.
Troopers arrested the driver on allegations of endangerment and reckless driving.
No crashes or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
AZDPS credited the motorists who called 911 with helping troopers quickly locate the vehicle and warned drivers against participating in dangerous trends or challenges that could put lives at risk.
The identities of the two other people the driver referenced were not released, and it was not immediately clear whether investigators had located or identified them.
The investigation remains ongoing.
