KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Osceola County Sheriff's Office says its homicide investigation into the tragic shooting death of 2-year-old Brayden Tennyson has been completed, and detectives have recommended a felony charge against the child's mother.
According to investigators, homicide detectives have forwarded a charge of culpable negligence under Florida Statute 784.05(3) to the State Attorney's Office against 37-year-old Shakelia Tennyson of Louisville, Georgia. Authorities say she has been notified of the recommended charge after returning to Georgia last week.
The recommended charge stems from Florida law regarding the storage or leaving of a loaded firearm within the reach or easy access of a minor when the child obtains the firearm and uses it to cause injury or death.
The case stems from the heartbreaking incident that occurred on July 12, when Brayden was fatally shot while visiting Central Florida with family. Investigators previously said the family had traveled from Georgia to celebrate what would have been Brayden's third birthday.
According to the Sheriff's Office, a 4-year-old family member located an unsecured handgun inside a vehicle and discharged it, striking Brayden. Despite emergency medical efforts, the toddler later died from his injuries. Sheriff Christopher Blackmon previously said the firearm was left unsecured inside the vehicle.
The State Attorney's Office will now review the investigation to determine whether to formally file the recommended felony charge.
