Military MV-22 Osprey Catches Fire at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport

MESA, Ariz. — Multiple fire agencies responded Sunday evening after an MV-22 Osprey military aircraft caught fire on the airfield at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, according to officials.
The incident was reported at approximately 5:55 p.m. on July 19, 2026, after flames and heavy smoke were seen coming from one of the aircraft's engine nacelles.
Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) crews from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport were the first to respond, deploying specialized firefighting foam trucks. Firefighters from the Mesa Fire and Medical Department and Gilbert Fire & Rescue also responded to assist.
Crews quickly brought the fire under control using firefighting foam, preventing the flames from spreading to other parts of the aircraft or nearby areas.
The MV-22 Osprey is a military tiltrotor aircraft capable of taking off and landing like a helicopter before transitioning into airplane-style flight. The aircraft is primarily operated by the U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy.
Officials have not said whether anyone was injured during the incident, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. The extent of the damage to the aircraft also remains unknown.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
