Powerful East Valley Storm Triggers Flooding, Crashes and Water Rescues

MESA, Ariz. — A massive storm engulfed portions of the East Valley on Wednesday, bringing widespread flooding, downed power lines and multiple crashes across Mesa and surrounding communities, including Apache Junction.
Some of the most significant flooding was reported along North Higley Road. Mesa Police and Mesa Fire closed portions of Higley between Brown Road and University Drive as emergency crews responded to multiple water rescues.
One rescue was reported near Casper, while another occurred near Adobe Road as floodwaters made several roads in the area dangerous or impassable.
At Higley and Brown roads, flooding became severe enough to nearly completely submerge a pickup truck in the Bashas’ parking lot. Footage from the scene shows the truck surrounded by deep floodwater as the storm continued to hammer the area.
Elsewhere across Mesa, emergency crews responded to reports of downed power lines, flooded streets and multiple traffic accidents as conditions rapidly deteriorated.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and never attempt to drive through standing or moving water. Even relatively shallow floodwater can sweep a vehicle off the roadway.
