TEMPE, Ariz. — A suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated assault investigation out of Chandler was shot and killed by police Friday evening following a foot pursuit in Tempe, according to the Chandler Police Department.

The incident occurred on July 17, 2026, just before 8 p.m., near an apartment complex in the 800 block of McKellips Road.

Authorities said detectives with the Chandler Police Department's Special Investigations Section were in Tempe with probable cause to arrest a suspect tied to an aggravated assault that occurred in Chandler approximately two weeks earlier.

When officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, police say he fled on foot into a nearby apartment complex.

During the pursuit, investigators said the suspect displayed a firearm, prompting an officer-involved shooting.

Officers immediately rendered medical aid to the suspect until firefighters arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a firearm was recovered near the suspect. The suspect's identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The officer-involved shooting is being investigated by the Mesa Police Department under the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT) protocol.

The Chandler Police Department will continue to handle the investigation into the original aggravated assault case, while all questions regarding the officer-involved shooting will be addressed by Mesa police as the lead investigative agency.

The investigation remains ongoing.
