MESA, Ariz. — A man being investigated in connection with a homicide is in custody after an officer-involved shooting late Friday night at a Mesa apartment complex, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Officers responded around 11 p.m. on July 17, 2026, to an apartment complex in the 500 block of South Dobson Roadafter receiving reports of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they found an adult male dead with what police described as obvious signs of trauma. Authorities said the homicide suspect had fled the scene before officers arrived.
Using witness information and investigative resources, officers located the suspect at a nearby apartment. Police attempted to negotiate a peaceful surrender after the suspect barricaded himself inside the residence.
According to Mesa police, the suspect fired multiple rounds at officers, prompting an officer-involved shooting. Police said no one was struck by the gunfire during the exchange.
The suspect later exited the apartment but refused officers' commands. Officers then deployed less-lethal force, including a bean bag shotgun and a Taser, before taking the suspect into custody.
The suspect suffered minor injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment. No officers or community members were injured during the incident.
The homicide investigation and the officer-involved shooting are being investigated by the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT). The multi-agency task force, which became operational on July 1, 2024, investigates critical force incidents involving participating law enforcement agencies across Arizona's East Valley.
The investigation remains ongoing.
