Mesa Police Release Body-Cam Footage from Officer-Involved Shooting Near Gateway Airport
Mesa, AZ — The Mesa Police Department has released the body-worn camera footage from an officer-involved shooting that occurred in October near Sossaman and Ray Road, just north of Mesa Gateway Airport. The newly released footage provides additional insight into the moments leading up to the violent confrontation that left one officer wounded and the suspect deceased.

The incident began just after 2:00 a.m., when officers responded to a call regarding a man who was reportedly impaired and trespassing on private property adjacent to airport land. A uniformed security guard had asked the individual—later identified as 34-year-old Cameron Oberlin—to leave the property before contacting police.
When officers arrived, Oberlin became confrontational and refused to comply with commands. Police say he fled in his vehicle, prompting officers to deploy a Grappler device, a tool designed to safely immobilize fleeing vehicles by securing a strap around a rear tire. Although the Grappler successfully attached, Oberlin continued to accelerate and resist officers’ instructions.
Officers then used less-lethal rounds in an attempt to gain compliance, but the situation escalated further. During a tense standoff, Oberlin opened fire from inside his vehicle, striking one Mesa Police officer. That officer was transported to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and continues to recover.
Throughout the standoff, officers continued to give verbal commands for Oberlin to surrender. A short time later, they heard a single gunshot from inside the vehicle and observed Oberlin slump over. He was later confirmed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A local driver, Thomas Gateley of Cactus & Coach Transportation, told iSkyNews.com he was unexpectedly caught in the crossfire. Gateley recalled the terrifying moments as gunfire erupted around him, sharing that he texted his family, “There’s gunshots, I’m pinned down, I love you,” believing he might not make it home to his wife and 2-year-old child.
Multiple rounds were fired by officers during the confrontation, though investigators have not yet confirmed the total number of shots fired.
Under East Valley protocol, the Gilbert Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Response Team (EVCRT). Mesa Police say the roadway in the area remained closed for several hours as officers processed the scene.
This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
