MESA, AZ — A man wanted on multiple serious felony charges, including crimes against children, died Tuesday afternoon after Mesa Police attempted to take him into custody along the U.S. 60 near Silly Mountain Road in Apache Junction.

According to a news release from the Mesa Police Department, the incident began on November 24, 2025, just after 3:00 p.m., when officers responded to a call for service in the 10000 block of Juanita Avenue. During the investigation, detectives developed probable cause to arrest 42-year-old Justin Meritt for felony-level offenses involving children.

On November 25, 2025, around 2:30 p.m., detectives located Meritt driving westbound on US-60 and conducted a traffic stop. After the vehicle stopped, Meritt refused to exit and did not respond to multiple verbal commands.

Due to safety concerns, SWAT was called in with an armored vehicle. When officers made entry, Meritt was found deceased in the driver’s seat with a handgun. Early findings indicate he died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Mesa Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation. Westbound US-60 remained closed for several hours during the on-scene processing, causing delays during busy holiday travel.

Mesa Police thanked Apache Junction PD, DPS, and ADOT for their assistance, and also thanked drivers for their patience during the extended closure.
