Bear vs. Car: Morning Commute Turns Wild on Rural Arizona Highway
Kearny, AZ (iSkyNews.com) — A rural Arizona highway turned tragic early Friday morning when a vehicle collided with a brown bear, resulting in significant vehicle damage and the death of the animal.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), the incident occurred just after 5:00 AM on State Route 177, as a driver was heading northbound toward Superior for work.
The driver initially believed he had struck a cow that had wandered onto the roadway. However, when an AZDPS Highway Patrol Trooper arrived at the scene and inspected the vehicle, the trooper noted that the hair left on the damaged front end did not match bovine fur.
Continuing the investigation, the trooper searched the southbound shoulder of the highway, following the trail of vehicle debris. Roughly a quarter mile from the point of impact, the trooper discovered car parts — and next to them, the body of a deceased brown bear.
Photos from the scene show the front end of the vehicle crushed, and the bear's paws visible near the roadside brush, confirming the severity of the collision.
The driver was not seriously injured.
AZDPS reminds motorists to stay alert on rural highways, where wildlife like bears, deer, javelina, and livestock can unexpectedly appear. These animals are more active in early morning and evening hours, particularly during seasonal migrations and temperature shifts.
