Mesa Police Air Unit Tracks Fleeing Suspect to Home Before SWAT Standoff

MESA, Ariz. — A man accused of pointing a firearm at another driver was arrested Friday evening after a police pursuit led officers to a Mesa home, triggering an hours-long SWAT standoff.
The incident began around 3 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2026, when Mesa Police officers were dispatched to the area of Val Vista Drive and the U.S. 60 freeway for reports of a person inside a vehicle pointing a firearm at another driver.
Police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Israel Sosa and located his vehicle a short time later.
When officers attempted to stop Sosa, police say he fled, prompting a pursuit.
The Mesa Police Air Unit tracked the vehicle to Sosa’s residence in the 100 block of North 74th Street, where authorities say Sosa went inside and barricaded himself.
A large police response followed as Mesa and Chandler SWAT teams were called to the scene.
For several hours, officers worked to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion while the surrounding area was closed to the public.
Sosa eventually exited the residence and was taken into custody without any reported injuries.
Charges against Sosa remain pending as investigators continue working the case.
The neighborhood is now reopening, although officers are expected to remain on scene as the investigation continues.
