SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A passenger has died following an early-morning single-vehicle crash in Scottsdale that police say may have involved alcohol and excessive speed.

According to the Scottsdale Police Department, the crash occurred around 2:40 a.m. Sunday near Drinkwater Boulevard and Civic Center Plaza.

Police initially reported that one person had been transported from the scene with life-threatening injuries. In an update later Sunday, Scottsdale Police confirmed that person, who was a passenger inside the vehicle, died at the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was also transported to the hospital and treated for injuries. Police did not immediately release information regarding the driver's condition or identify either person involved.

Investigators said alcohol consumption and speed are considered contributing factors in the crash.

The roadway remained closed for approximately eight hours while detectives with the Scottsdale Police Department's Vehicle Crimes and Reconstruction Unit conducted their initial investigation at the scene.

The collision remains under active investigation.

Scottsdale Police said no additional updates are currently planned regarding the incident.
