Large Mesa House Fire Displaces Family, Forces Closure of Mesa Drive

MESA, Ariz. — A large house fire in Mesa displaced a family Friday evening and forced police to shut down a major intersection as firefighters stretched multiple hose lines across the roadway to battle the flames.
The fire broke out around 7:30 p.m. in the 300 block of East Kenwood Circle, near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road.
According to officials, the fire was discovered through real-time aerial drone coverage, which showed heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage and windows of the home.
When Mesa Fire and Medical crews arrived, firefighters encountered a significant amount of fire and upgraded the incident to a working fire.
Firefighters faced an additional challenge because of limited access to a nearby fire hydrant. Crews were forced to run a large hose line from the area of Mesa Drive and McKellips Road, stretching it across the intersection to supply water to firefighters at the home.
Because of the hose lines crossing the roadway, Mesa Police shut down eastbound, westbound and northbound traffic at Mesa Drive and McKellips Road while firefighters worked.
Multiple Mesa Fire and Medical resources responded to the scene, including the department's Drone Unit, Utility 208, a rehabilitation truck and a battalion chief. Mesa Fire and Medical also dispatched a Fire Investigator to the scene.
Crews attacked the fire from both the ground and the roof while running multiple hose lines in an effort to bring the large fire under control.
Mesa Fire and Medical crews were also able to secure livestock and other animals at the property during the incident. The condition of the animals was not immediately known.
The family who lived at the home could be seen standing near the end of the street as firefighters battled the flames. The residence sustained extensive damage and was considered uninhabitable Friday night, leaving the family displaced.
Salt River Project (SRP) was also dispatched to the scene to assist with utilities.
By approximately 9 p.m., Mesa Police had reopened McKellips Road approaching Mesa Drive. However, Mesa Drive remained closed while emergency crews continued operating in the area.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available. A Mesa Fire and Medical Fire Investigator responded to determine the cause and origin of the blaze.
No information regarding injuries was immediately released.
