ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 44-year-old Lakeland woman was killed and a 9-year-old girl was seriously injured Sunday morning after a sedan crashed into a concrete traffic barrier and caught fire near the Daryl Carter Parkway interchange on Interstate 4, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday, September 6, near the I-4 eastbound ramp to Daryl Carter Parkway at mile marker 70 in Orange County.
According to an official FHP press release sent directly to iSkyNews.com, a 2017 Honda Accord was traveling eastbound on I-4 and approaching the exit ramp to Daryl Carter Parkway when investigators believe the driver may have suffered a medical episode.
FHP said the vehicle traveled onto the grassy median separating the exit ramp from the main travel lanes and continued eastbound through the intersection of Daryl Carter Parkway.
The Honda then struck a curb before its front end collided with a concrete traffic barrier on the north shoulder of Daryl Carter Parkway, near the entrance ramp to eastbound I-4.
The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.
The 44-year-old female driver, from Lakeland, was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased.
A 9-year-old female passenger, also from Lakeland, was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. FHP's crash report lists her injuries as serious, while the agency's narrative states the injuries were non-life-threatening.
FHP said the child was wearing a seatbelt or child restraint at the time of the crash. The driver was listed as not wearing a seatbelt.
Possible Earlier Crash on I-4
Investigators also believe the Honda Accord may have been involved in a separate crash shortly before the fatal collision.
According to FHP, the earlier crash occurred on I-4 near mile marker 69 and involved a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan.
No injuries were reported in that collision.
FHP said both crashes remain under investigation.
