MIAMI — Tropical Depression Two is expected to gradually strengthen over the next 24 hours, with forecasters warning that portions of the Gulf Coast could begin experiencing tropical storm conditions as early as late Monday night.

According to the National Hurricane Center's 10 a.m. CDT Monday advisory, the system is forecast to move westward across the Gulf of Mexico while strengthening. Tropical storm conditions are possible from the Florida Panhandle westward to southeastern Louisiana beginning late Monday into Tuesday.

A Storm Surge Watch has been issued for portions of the Alabama, Mississippi, and southeastern Louisiana coastlines, where life-threatening storm surge is possible if the system continues to intensify.

Forecasters are also urging residents in Louisiana and Texas to closely monitor the storm's progress, noting that additional watches or warnings could be issued later Monday or Tuesday as the forecast becomes more certain.

In addition to strong winds, the National Hurricane Center warns that flash flooding will be a major concern through Friday. Heavy rainfall could impact communities along the Gulf Coast from western Florida to the middle Texas coast, including parts of southern Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Residents across the Gulf Coast are encouraged to review their hurricane preparedness plans, stay informed of the latest forecasts, and be prepared to act if watches or warnings are expanded.
