DAVENPORT, Fla. (July 24, 2026) — Five teenagers from the Washington, D.C., area and their basketball coach have been arrested following an investigation into an alleged retail theft at a Davenport convenience store, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

The arrests stem from a theft reported at approximately 4:10 a.m. on July 23 at the 7-Eleven located at 3141 Ronald Reagan Parkway.

According to detectives, the teens are members of Run It Up, a travel basketball program affiliated with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The team was staying at a vacation rental in Solterra Resort, less than a mile from the store, while in Central Florida to participate in the Puma NXTPro basketball tournament.
Investigators say the suspects concealed merchandise including Doritos, gummies, Starburst Minis, a Big Mama sausage, lemonade, and grape and orange Slurpees, with a combined value of $37.60. When a store clerk confronted them about the alleged theft, the group fled the business.
Deputies responding to the area located three of the suspects near the entrance to Solterra after they allegedly placed the stolen items into a backpack and hid it in nearby bushes.
Detectives later contacted the team's coach, Malik Abdul Harvey, 27, of Bryans Road, Maryland, and asked whether he could identify the remaining two suspects captured on surveillance video.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the remaining two teens were located later that morning and admitted Harvey was their coach. Investigators say Harvey later confessed that he had lied about not knowing the identities of the two teens in an effort to protect them.
"We welcome anyone who wants to visit or stay in Polk County on vacation. But people need to realize that while you might be able to get away with crimes and foolishness where you live, it won't fly around here. If you steal in Polk County, we're going to send you home with a commemorative mug shot from the Polk County Jail," Sheriff Grady Judd said.
The five juvenile suspects were each charged with:
- Conspiracy to Commit Retail Theft (Third-Degree Felony)
- Tampering with Evidence (Third-Degree Felony)
- Petit Theft (First-Degree Misdemeanor)
- Violation of the County Curfew Ordinance for Juveniles (Misdemeanor)
The juveniles were identified by the Sheriff's Office as:
- Tavion Rashaud Hale, 17, of Washington, D.C.
- Taureon Darnell Ferrell, 16, of Washington, D.C.
- Obai Sankoh Sheriff, 16, of Lanham, Maryland
- James Thomas Hall, 16, of Washington, D.C.
- Tyjuan Grover, 17, of Washington, D.C.
Harvey was arrested on the following charges:
- Child Neglect (Third-Degree Felony)
- Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (First-Degree Misdemeanor)
- Accessory After the Fact (First-Degree Misdemeanor)
- Resisting an Officer Without Violence (First-Degree Misdemeanor)
According to the Sheriff's Office, Harvey is employed by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services at the Cheltenham Youth Detention Center, where his responsibilities include assisting and empowering youth. Authorities noted that the basketball trip was not associated with his employment duties.
The investigation remains active. All charges are allegations, and each defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
