SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — An 80-year-old Scottsdale man has been arrested after police say a confrontation with a door-to-door solicitor escalated into a shooting Sunday afternoon, leaving the victim with a gunshot wound to his back.

Scottsdale Police identified the suspect as Patrick Joseph McBride, 80, who was arrested in connection with the September 13 shooting near the 35400 block of North 86th Place.

Officers were called to the area at approximately 4:14 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Police located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital with injuries initially described as life-threatening and is now listed in stable condition.

According to Scottsdale Police, detectives learned the victim had been working door-to-door when he encountered McBride at McBride's residence.

Police say McBride confronted the solicitor about being inside the private community. The victim left McBride's residence but remained in the neighborhood as he continued working.

Investigators say McBride later encountered the man again elsewhere in the neighborhood. During that second encounter, police say McBride was armed with a handgun.

The victim was shot in the back.

McBride remained at the scene and was detained by responding officers. Detectives from the Scottsdale Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit subsequently took over the investigation.

McBride was arrested and booked on allegations of aggravated assault involving serious physical injury and disorderly conduct involving a weapon.
