A 38-year-old Crystal River man was killed Wednesday morning following a crash involving a tractor-trailer in Sumter County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).

Troopers say the crash happened around 10:20 a.m. at the intersection of County Road 470 and State Road 44.

According to investigators, the driver of a Kia Soul was traveling northbound on CR-470 when he entered the intersection despite a stop sign. The vehicle then crossed into the path of an eastbound tractor-trailer traveling on SR-44.

The tractor-trailer slammed into the Kia, causing catastrophic damage.

FHP says the Crystal River man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 60-year-old man from Ocala, suffered minor injuries and was not transported from the scene.

Traffic in the area was impacted for several hours while troopers investigated the crash and crews worked to clear the roadway.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
