CHANDLER, Ariz. — A man died Thursday afternoon after being shot by a Chandler Police officer during a confrontation near Dobson and Warner roads.

The incident began just before 3:30 p.m. on August 27, 2026, when officers were called to the intersection for reports of a man waving a gun.

When two officers arrived, police say they found 22-year-old Romero Anthony Hernandez holding a firearm and pointing it in different directions.

According to Chandler Police, officers repeatedly ordered Hernandez to drop the gun, but he did not comply.

Police say one of the officers then fired a single shot, striking Hernandez and causing him to drop the weapon.

After officers determined it was safe to move in, they began lifesaving efforts until Chandler Fire crews arrived.

Hernandez was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

Investigators say a gun was found next to Hernandez after the shooting. Police also reported finding a second firearm on him before he was transported to the hospital.

No officers were injured, and police say no bystanders were hurt.

The Chandler officer who fired the shot has been with the department for about three years. His or her name has not yet been released.
