COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida Highway Patrol state trooper was seriously injured early Sunday morningafter an impaired driver crashed into a marked patrol vehicle along Interstate 75 in Collier County, according to an official FHP press release.

The crash occurred at approximately 3:18 a.m. on northbound Interstate 75 (Alligator Alley) near mile marker 64.

According to investigators, a marked FHP Dodge Charger, with its emergency blue lights activated, was stopped and positioned partially in the outside travel lane and shoulder. The trooper had exited the vehicle and was standing on the paved shoulder while assisting a disabled motorist at the time of the incident.

Authorities say a Toyota sedan, driven by a 32-year-old man from Sarasota, was traveling northbound in the outside lane when it approached the scene. The right front of the Toyota collided with the left front side of the FHP patrol vehicle, causing a violent impact.

The crash was so severe that it ripped off the patrol car’s left front tire and bumper, sending debris across the roadway. Investigators say that debris struck the trooper, resulting in serious injuries.

The trooper was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been released.

The driver of the Toyota, identified as Jonathan Ronald Munas, 32, of Sarasota, was not injured in the crash. Troopers determined he was impaired at the time of the incident and placed him under arrest for driving under the influence. Authorities reported his blood alcohol concentration was .159, nearly twice the legal limit.

Munas was taken to the Collier County Jail following his arrest.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, led by Sergeant B. Hernandez and Corporal M. Dzugan.

Officials are reminding drivers of the dangers of impaired driving, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel.
