VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A tragic crash on Interstate 95 Saturday evening claimed the life of a semi-truck driver after the vehicle struck debris and veered off the roadway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol official press release, the crash occurred when a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia semi tractor-trailer was traveling northbound in the inside lane of I-95 just north of Mile Marker 256 in Volusia County.

Investigators say metal debris was blocking the inside lane, forcing the driver to take evasive action. The semi reportedly swerved to the right but still struck the debris, then overcorrected back to the left, ultimately running off the roadway into the center median.

Authorities say the truck then collided with several trees, causing catastrophic damage. The left side of the vehicle was torn apart upon impact, and the driver—an adult male whose identity is still pending—was ejected from the vehicle.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

🚔 Investigation Ongoing

The crash is being investigated by FHP Trooper Sampson, with Corporal Reed serving as the homicide investigator.

Officials say the Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the identity of the victim and notify next of kin. At this time, seatbelt use remains unknown.
