STAMFORD, Conn. — Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum, announced Thursday that it has completed its acquisition of Cox Communications, officially bringing the two major cable and broadband providers together in a deal that will eventually transition Cox customers to the Spectrum brand.
The transaction closed Thursday, Aug. 20, following regulatory approvals, including approval from the Federal Communications Commission and the final state-level clearance in California. The combination creates one of the nation's largest broadband and video providers, with operations reaching customers across 45 states.
For current Cox customers, however, the most important message from the company is that nothing changes immediately.
Spectrum says existing Cox customers will not see immediate changes to their current service or pricing unless they personally make changes to their accounts. The company plans to begin introducing the Spectrum brand, pricing and product packages throughout current Cox markets beginning in mid-September.
Cox Customers Should Watch Their Email
Current Cox customers should be receiving an email advising them of the acquisition and explaining what changes they can expect.
In an email sent to customers Thursday, Spectrum President and CEO Chris Winfrey welcomed Cox subscribers to Spectrum and said the company's priority is providing a smooth transition.
The customer notice says Cox subscribers will continue receiving their existing service for now without immediate pricing or service changes.
Spectrum is also offering eligible Cox Internet customers who do not currently subscribe to Cox Mobile one mobile line free for one year as part of the transition. Charter independently confirmed the promotion in its announcement Thursday.
Spectrum Services Coming to Cox Markets
Beginning in mid-September, Charter says it plans to introduce its full Spectrum lineup in former Cox markets, including Spectrum Internet, Mobile and entertainment packages.
Eligible television customers are also expected to eventually receive access to a collection of streaming services through Spectrum's entertainment offerings.
According to the customer notice, eligible plans could include services such as HBO Max, Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, Paramount+, Peacock, AMC+ and ViX. Spectrum says additional information about eligibility and timing will be provided as the transition moves forward.
The company says it also plans to transition Cox's offshore sales and customer-service operations to the United States within the next 18 months. The FCC highlighted the movement of jobs back to the United States when it approved the transaction earlier this year.
Spectrum Name Stays for Customers
There is an unusual twist to the merger.
While Cox customers will eventually see their services rebranded as Spectrum, the combined company's corporate parent intends to change its name to Cox Communications within approximately one year.
The consumer-facing Spectrum brand, however, will remain.
The combined company will continue to be headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, while maintaining a significant presence in Atlanta, Georgia, where Cox has long maintained its headquarters.
A Multibillion-Dollar Deal
The Charter-Cox combination was originally announced in May 2025.
Under the completed transaction, Cox Enterprises received Charter partnership units, convertible preferred units and approximately $4 billion in cash. Cox Enterprises and its subsidiaries now hold approximately 26% of the combined company's fully diluted shares on an as-converted and as-exchanged basis. Approximately $12 billion in Cox debt and finance leases also remain outstanding at Charter subsidiaries following the transaction.
The FCC approved the approximately $34.5 billion acquisition in February, saying commitments connected with the transaction included rural broadband investment, bringing jobs back to the United States and access to lower-priced service plans.
California regulators provided the final major regulatory approval shortly before Thursday's closing.
What Cox Customers Need to Do
For now, customers do not need to make immediate changes to their Cox service.
Customers should watch their email for official information from Cox and Spectrum explaining the transition, new Spectrum products and when changes become available in their area.
Spectrum has also established a transition website for Cox customers:
The transition to Spectrum branding, pricing and packages is expected to begin in former Cox markets in mid-September.
