Student With Knife Prompts Lockdown at Discovery Intermediate School in Poinciana
POINCIANA, Fla. — A student was found with a knife on campus Thursday at Discovery Intermediate School, prompting a temporary lockdown and a response from law enforcement.
The school, located at 5350 San Miguel Road in Poinciana, reported that administrators received information that a student may have brought a weapon onto campus. According to a message released by school officials, the report was immediately investigated and the weapon — identified as a knife — was located.
Officials say the student involved will face serious disciplinary consequences through both law enforcement and the school district.
Following the initial investigation, administrators received a second report claiming another possible weapon and threat on campus, prompting officials to place the school into lockdown out of an abundance of caution.
Law enforcement officers searched the campus but no additional weapons were found, according to school officials.
School administrators say the second report stemmed from rumors circulating among students about another weapon, which contributed to confusion and prompted the precautionary lockdown.
“Students who created chaos by spreading the false rumor of an additional weapon will also receive consequences,” the statement said.
To maintain safety during dismissal, school officials implemented a staggered dismissal process to ensure students could leave campus in an orderly and controlled manner.
Discovery Intermediate Principal Mr. Dunn addressed the incident in a message to families, emphasizing that weapons, drugs, and threats will not be tolerated on campus.
“I need everyone to hear loudly and clearly; it is my expectation that students on campus and off campus understand that their words and actions have consequences,” Dunn said. “Students who decide to interrupt the learning of others will be given the most severe consequences allowed by our code of conduct.”
School officials also urged parents and students to help ensure the campus remains safe and focused on its mission of providing a positive learning environment.
No injuries were reported.
