LAKELAND, Fla. — Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Lakeland man Tuesday night after he allegedly assaulted a victim and fled the scene, prompting deputies to track down his vehicle and box it in at a nearby intersection.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 9:21 p.m. on March 3, 2026, to a residence near Tanglewood Street and Combee Road, just west of Lakeland, following reports of a violent disturbance.
Investigators say the suspect, later identified as 38-year-old Michael Joshua Stammer of Lakeland, allegedly repeatedly punched and choked a victim during the altercation. Deputies also say Stammer took the victim’s cellphone when the victim attempted to call 911, preventing them from seeking help.
After the incident, authorities say Stammer fled the area in a blue 2014 Toyota sedan.
Deputies Locate Vehicle
A Polk County deputy later spotted the vehicle and began following it discreetly while waiting for additional units to respond to the area.
When Stammer stopped for a red light at U.S. Highway 98 and County Road 540A, deputies quickly moved in and boxed in the vehicle, preventing him from driving away.
Stammer was then taken into custody without further incident.
According to deputies, once Stammer was detained it became apparent that he may have been driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
He was transported to the Polk County Sheriff’s Processing Center, where he was booked on multiple charges.
