Tragedy on I-75: Car Plummets from Overpass in Fatal Collision

WILDWOOD, FL — A morning commute turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy Friday when a vehicle lost control and fell from an overpass, landing directly in the path of interstate traffic.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly before 10:00 AM at the CR-462 overpass spanning I-75.

The Sequence of Events

A 27-year-old man from Inverness was traveling eastbound on CR-462 in a Honda Accord when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle. The Honda veered off the roadway, breached the overpass barrier, and plummeted onto the southbound lanes of I-75 below.

At that exact moment, a 61-year-old man from Georgia was driving his Volvo SUV southbound on the interstate. The falling Honda collided violently with the Volvo upon impact with the highway.

The Aftermath

The force of the collision sent both vehicles spinning in different directions:

The Honda Accord came to a rest in the middle of the southbound travel lanes.
The Volvo SUV managed to travel to the outside shoulder of the interstate before coming to a final stop.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene within minutes, but authorities have confirmed that the 27-year-old driver of the Honda suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Volvo was significantly more fortunate; officials report he sustained only minor injuries, though he was visibly shaken by the freak nature of the accident.

Southbound lanes of I-75 remained heavily congested throughout the morning as investigators worked to piece together what caused the Inverness man to lose control. Drivers are being encouraged to seek alternate routes as crews work to clear the wreckage.

The names of the involved parties have not yet been released pending kin notification.
