Woman Killed in Three-Vehicle Crash on Loop 202 Santan Near Higley Road

MESA, Ariz. — A woman was killed Sunday morning in a three-vehicle crash that shut down the westbound lanes of Loop 202 Santan near Higley Road, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on westbound State Route 202, just west of the Higley Road overpass.
According to DPS, the crash began when a vehicle became disabled due to mechanical problems and came to a stop in the No. 2 lane of the freeway.
Investigators said a Volkswagen Jetta then collided with the disabled vehicle. Moments later, a pickup truck struck the Jetta, resulting in a three-vehicle crash.
The adult female driver of the Volkswagen Jetta suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not released her identity pending notification of her next of kin.
The westbound lanes of Loop 202 were closed near milepost 38 while Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers investigated the crash and crews worked to clear the scene. Eastbound traffic was not affected.
Drivers traveling through the area experienced significant delays and were encouraged to use alternate routes. As of Sunday afternoon, transportation officials had not provided an estimated time for the westbound lanes to reopen.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
