Man Armed With Machete Killed in Coolidge Police Shooting, Video Released
COOLIDGE, Ariz. — Authorities have released new details surrounding a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred the evening of February 5 in Coolidge.
According to the Coolidge Police Department, the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when an officer was checking on a vehicle parked along Palo Verde Road, just east of Arizona Boulevard. The officer was speaking with a woman outside the vehicle when another car arrived at the scene.
Police say the driver, identified as Francisco Canales Aguilar, 54, exited the vehicle and aggressively approached the officer while armed with a machete. The officer fired his weapon, striking Aguilar. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later obtained home surveillance video that shows Aguilar leaving his residence earlier that evening carrying a machete. Authorities also revealed that Aguilar made a phone call to a family member shortly before the shooting, during which he reportedly said goodbye.
Police confirmed Aguilar was in the process of going through a divorce with the woman who had been stopped along Palo Verde Road at the time of the incident.
