76-Year-Old Merritt Island Man Killed in Head-On Crash on Sykes Creek Parkway

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A 76-year-old Merritt Island man was killed Tuesday evening after his SUV crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head‑on with a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 5:31 p.m. at Sykes Creek Parkway and Old Audubon Road.

Troopers say the man was driving a 2003 Toyota 4Runner northbound when he failed to negotiate a curve and drifted into the southbound lane. His vehicle entered the direct path of a 2025 GMC Sierra driven by a 30‑year‑old Merritt Island man.

The two vehicles struck front‑to‑front, causing severe damage.

The 76‑year‑old driver was transported to Cape Canaveral Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. FHP confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt. His next of kin has been notified   

The pickup truck driver sustained minor injuries and remained on scene. Troopers say he was wearing his seatbelt.

The Florida Highway Patrol’s Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
