CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – A dangerous high-speed chase on Interstate 10 came to a dramatic end late last night, thanks to the combined efforts of multiple Arizona law enforcement agencies—and a piece of equipment called the Grappler.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), State Troopers spotted a vehicle speeding with no headlights on, clocking it at 120 mph near Casa Grande. When troopers activated lights and sirens, the driver refused to stop, sparking a pursuit.
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and Casa Grande Police Department joined the chase, with deputies attempting to use spike strips to slow the fleeing vehicle. Troopers eventually succeeded in spiking the tires, but the driver kept going.
“This was a great example of multiple agencies working together to stop a dangerous driver before someone got hurt,” AZDPS said in a statement.
That’s when deputies deployed the Grappler, a specialized device mounted on the front of a patrol vehicle. The Grappler uses a heavy-duty nylon net that extends from the front bumper to wrap around a suspect’s rear tire, instantly locking it in place and bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop.

Once immobilized, the driver was taken into custody without further incident. Troopers say he showed multiple signs of impairment and was later found to have fled from Marana Police earlier that same night.
He now faces charges of DUI, unlawful flight, and reckless driving, and is booked into the Pinal County Jail.
AZDPS reminded drivers that:
🚓 Felony flight = JAIL
🚓 Criminal speeding = JAIL
🚓 DUI = JAIL
