OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — The Osceola County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of its four-legged deputies after announcing the death of K-9 Athena, a dedicated bloodhound whose work helped reunite missing children, vulnerable adults, and others with their families.
In a heartfelt message shared Thursday, Sheriff Christopher A. Blackmon and members of the agency reflected on Athena's years of faithful service and the lasting impact she made throughout Osceola County.
Athena joined the Osceola County Sheriff's Office in 2021 and quickly became an invaluable member of the K-9 Unit. Trained as a bloodhound, she was called upon to track missing and endangered people through dense woods, darkness, and difficult terrain, never giving up until her job was complete.
Officials said Athena's work brought hope to countless families during some of their most difficult moments.
For her handler, Deputy Luis Morales-Torres, Athena was far more than a working dog.
"Athena was a phenomenal partner. She helped us find the lost and the hurt. She is gone too soon, but has served the citizens of this county faithfully. Rest easy, Athena… We have it from here," Deputy Morales-Torres said.
The Sheriff's Office described the bond between deputy and K-9 as one built on trust, loyalty, and countless hours spent working side by side in the field.
"Losing a partner leaves a real emptiness," the agency wrote. "The place where eager paws waited is now quiet. The leash will not lead another search, and the familiar face that greeted each day with energy and dedication is gone."
While Athena never sought recognition, the Sheriff's Office said her courage, determination, and unwavering devotion left a lasting legacy throughout the community she served.
Sheriff Blackmon and members of the agency extended their thoughts and prayers to Deputy Morales-Torres, the K-9 Unit, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing Athena.
The agency closed its tribute by thanking Athena for her years of service.
"Thank you, Athena, for every mile you tracked, every life you helped save, and every moment you spent helping others. You have completed your watch. You will never be forgotten. Rest easy, sweet girl."
