Arizona Buzz: What to Do (and NOT to Do) If You Run Into Bees

ARIZONA – If you live in Arizona, you’ve probably crossed paths with bees at some point. Most of the time, it’s no big deal—they’re just busy doing their thing. But every now and then, a bee encounter can turn into a real situation, like the recent call in Eloy where a homeowner found themselves trapped inside by a swarm that had moved in through the attic.

Before you go into full panic mode, here’s the thing—bees aren’t out to get you. They’re actually some of the most important little workers on the planet.

🌼 A Little Bee Backstory

Bees have been around for over 100 million years—long before humans ever showed up. They started out as wasp-like insects, but somewhere along the way decided pollen was better than prey. That switch made them one of nature’s best pollinators.

Today, there are more than 20,000 species of bees in the world. Here in Arizona, we see a mix of European honey bees and Africanized honey bees (a.k.a. “killer bees”), which tend to be a bit more protective of their hives.

🍯 Why We Need Them

Bees help pollinate about one-third of the food we eat. Think almonds, berries, melons, cucumbers—even coffee. Without them, a lot of our favorite foods (and flowers) would disappear.

So while running into a swarm can be scary, the goal is to stay safe and keep the bees safe so they can keep doing their important work.

🐝 What TO Do if You See Bees

✅ Stay Calm – No swatting, no flailing. Quick movements can make them defensive.
✅ Get to Safety – Move slowly into a building or a car and close the door.
✅ Cover Up – If they start stinging, protect your head and face.
✅ Call the Pros – A beekeeper or pest control expert can remove them safely.
✅ Keep Pets and Kids Inside – Make sure everyone stays away until the bees are gone.

🐝 What NOT to Do Around Bees

❌ Don’t yell “NOT THE BEES!” like Nicolas Cage—it’s funny in a movie, but not helpful in real life.
❌ Don’t grab a broom and try to shoo them out like a nosy neighbor.
❌ Don’t spray them with water—you’ll just get wet, angry bees.
❌ Don’t wear strong perfume or cologne—you’ll smell like an all-you-can-eat buffet.
❌ Don’t pick a fight—they have better numbers, better teamwork, and no fear of heights.

🐝 The Bottom Line

Most bee encounters end without drama if you give them space. If you see a swarm hanging out on a tree or wall, they might just be resting on their journey. Chances are, they’ll leave in a day or two.

If they’re inside your home or acting aggressive, get professional help. That way, you stay safe, the bees get relocated, and everybody wins.
