KINGMAN, AZ — A potentially deadly crash was narrowly avoided Thursday night after an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) trooper encountered a wrong-way driver on US-93 near Kingman.
According to AZDPS, the trooper was traveling southbound on the highway when a truck suddenly appeared in the same lane, heading northbound — directly toward them. The trooper quickly took evasive action and was able to avoid a head-on collision.
Despite the close call, the trooper continued pursuit and successfully intercepted the vehicle, which was still barreling the wrong way down the southbound lanes. The driver was safely taken into custody and arrested for reckless driving.
Officials say this incident is a stark reminder of the dangers wrong-way drivers pose, especially at night.
“This could’ve ended in tragedy,” said an AZDPS spokesperson. “Our troopers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect Arizona drivers.”
🚨 DPS Safety Reminders:
- Always double-check on-ramp signs. “DO NOT ENTER” means you’re headed the wrong way.
- Drive sober. Drive alert. Many wrong-way crashes involve impaired or drowsy drivers.
- If you see a wrong-way driver, call 911 immediately. Your call could save a life.
AZDPS continues to stress vigilance on Arizona’s highways, especially on high-speed, rural routes like US-93, which have seen multiple serious wrong-way crashes in recent years.
