MESA, AZ — A serious rear-end collision on AZ-202 Red Mountain this morning is highlighting the dangers of driving while fatigued. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), Troopers responded to a two-vehicle crash in Mesa where one car eventually caught fire following the impact.

The incident occurred as both vehicles were heading westbound on Loop 202 Red Mountain near Country Club Dr. According to AZDPS, Driver number one, who was reportedly experiencing fatigue due to ongoing health issues, fell asleep at the wheel while driving to a doctor's appointment. The driver rear-ended another vehicle in traffic.

Thankfully, both drivers reported only minor injuries, and the fatigued driver was able to exit her vehicle safely before it became fully engulfed in flames. The Mesa Fire and Medical Department responded quickly and extinguished the fire.

⚠️ Fatigued Driving Is No Joke

According to AZDPS, drowsy or unwell drivers pose a serious risk to themselves and others on the road. Incidents like this one serve as a stark reminder that even a momentary lapse in alertness can lead to dangerous consequences.

💡 Safety Tips: If You’re Feeling Fatigued…

🚫 Don’t get behind the wheel if you're tired, dizzy, or unwell
🛏️ Take a short nap—even 15–20 minutes can help restore alertness
💧 Stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals before driving
☕ Caffeine may help, but it’s not a substitute for proper rest
📱 Use a ride service or ask someone for a ride if you're not feeling well
🚗 In a crash? Exit the vehicle if it’s safe to do so—fires can happen quickly

AZDPS reminds all drivers that fatigue-related crashes are 100% preventable. When in doubt, choose safety first—and don’t drive drowsy.
