ORANGE COUNTY, FL — A man identified as Terry Washington Jr., 30, was fatally shot by a deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday afternoon after authorities say he attacked deputies with a knife and attempted to grab an officer's firearm. Body-worn camera footage of the incident has now been released to the public.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., deputies responded to a residence at 203 N. Ortman Drive following reports of a man suffering from schizophrenia acting erratically in the street and reportedly not taking his prescribed medication. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with Washington’s father, who informed them his son was inside a bedroom and armed with a knife.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by speaking with Washington for roughly five minutes before he exited the bedroom. According to investigators, Washington immediately charged at one of the deputies, swinging the knife and reaching for the deputy's firearm.

In response to the immediate threat, the deputy discharged his service weapon, striking Washington multiple times. Deputies administered first aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The deputy involved sustained lacerations to the head during the struggle and was treated at a nearby hospital. He is expected to recover.

Per department protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now leading the investigation. Once FDLE concludes its review, findings will be submitted to the State Attorney’s Office. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will also conduct an internal investigation. The deputy who fired his weapon has been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the initial review.

Body-worn camera footage from the incident has been released in accordance with the OCSO policy on critical incident transparency. The iSkyNews.com News Desk has received a copy of the footage and is posted below:
