iSkyNews.com Special Report | CHILD HOT CAR DEATHS: A GROWING TRAGEDY
It’s something no parent ever thinks could happen to them—but it happens far too often. Over 1,010 children have died from heatstroke in hot cars in the past 25 years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) . Most of these tragedies were completely preventable.
In 2024, we lost 39 children to hot car deaths—up 35% from the year before. And in 2018 and 2019, a record 53 children died each year. Behind every number is a name, a face, a family forever changed.
☀️ Why It’s So Dangerous
A child’s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult’s. That means even just a few minutes in a parked car can be deadly. Heatstroke starts when body temperature hits 104°F, and it can be fatal at 107°F.
It doesn’t matter if the windows are cracked or the car is in the shade. The temperature inside can become life-threatening very quickly.
💔 How These Tragedies Happen
- About 52% of hot car deaths happen because a child is accidentally forgotten in the back seat.
- 1 in 4 cases happen when a child gets into a car on their own and can’t get out.
💡 Simple Steps That Can Save Lives
For Parents & Caregivers:
- Never leave a child alone in a car. Not even for a minute.
- Make it a habit to check the back seat every time you park.
- Ask your daycare or school to call you if your child doesn’t show up.
- Put something you’ll need—like your phone or purse—in the back seat to remind you.
- Lock your car when you're not using it, and keep keys out of reach.
For Everyone:
- If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 right away.
- If the child looks sick or unresponsive, don’t wait—get them out and cool them down quickly.
- Even if you don’t have kids, a curious child could get into your unlocked vehicle. Always lock up.
🚗 Remember This:
Once You Park: STOP. LOOK. LOCK.
This can happen to anyone. No one thinks they’ll forget… until they do. Let’s spread the word, stay alert, and protect the little ones who depend on us.
