Tampa Woman Killed at Bus Stop; Driver Arrested on DUI Manslaughter Charge

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A 49-year-old Tampa woman was killed Tuesday evening after a car went off the roadway, became airborne and struck her while she was waiting at a bus stop along 56th Street North.

The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. on September 22, 2026, near the intersection of 56th Street North and Pitch Pine Circle in Hillsborough County.

Investigators said a Chevrolet sedan driven by a 33-year-old Tampa man was traveling southbound on 56th Street North when the driver lost control while approaching Pitch Pine Circle.

The Chevrolet traveled onto the shoulder, struck a culvert and became airborne before striking the woman at a bus stop located at the northwest corner of the intersection.

The vehicle continued moving after hitting the pedestrian and then collided with a Toyota sedan that was stopped on Pitch Pine Circle at the intersection. The Toyota was being driven by a 42-year-old Tampa man.

The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was rushed to an area hospital, where she later died.

Troopers identified the Chevrolet driver as Benny Bruce Wallace. Investigators determined Wallace was impaired, and he was arrested on a charge of DUI manslaughter.

No additional information about the Toyota driver’s condition was immediately provided.

The fatal crash remains under investigation.
