Man Fatally Shot by Gilbert Police After Allegedly Running Toward Officer With Knife

GILBERT, Ariz. — A man was fatally shot by a Gilbert police officer early Tuesday morning after authorities said he ran toward the officer while holding an object.
Gilbert Police received a call at approximately 4:29 a.m. on September 15 from a woman who reported that her adult son was walking outside their residence near the 900 block of East San Remo with a knife.

According to police, the caller expressed concerns for the safety of family members and responding officers. She also warned that her son would not cooperate.
The first officer arrived within five minutes and reported seeing the man running toward him with an object in his hand. Police said the officer gave the man multiple commands to stop, but he continued moving toward the officer.
An officer-involved shooting then occurred.
Officers provided life-saving measures at the scene before the man was transported to a hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Police said a knife was recovered from the location where the shooting occurred. No officers or other community members were injured.
The Mesa Police Department will investigate the shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.
The name of the man and the officer involved have not been released.
