WASHINGTON — Americans traveling in or around the Middle East are being urged to stay alert as rising tensions increase the possibility of sudden military escalation and major travel disruptions.

The U.S. Department of State says the security environment across the region remains complex and unpredictable, with conditions that could change quickly.

Americans already in the Middle East should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions. Travelers are being encouraged to keep a close eye on airport operations, airline updates and local security alerts.

The warning comes as Iranian-supported Houthi forces continue hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including activity involving civilian airports.

U.S. officials say the ongoing military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly.

Americans who are currently outside the Middle East are being advised to seriously reconsider travel to or through the region for the time being.

Anyone who does decide to travel should closely monitor their airline and airport before leaving for the airport, especially if their trip includes a connection through the Middle East.

The State Department is also warning that potential threats may not be limited to the region itself.

U.S. diplomatic facilities outside the Middle East have previously been targeted, and officials say Iran or groups supportive of Iran could target other American interests overseas.

Those potential targets could include U.S. businesses, institutions and other locations associated with the United States or American citizens.

Travelers should also remember that conditions can vary significantly from one country to another. Anyone planning an international trip is encouraged to review the latest country-specific travel alerts before leaving.

Americans traveling overseas can also sign up for the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program, or STEP, to receive security alerts and updates from nearby U.S. embassies and consulates.

The situation remains fluid, and travelers should be prepared to adjust or cancel plans if security conditions worsen.
