ATLANTA, Ga. — Federal health officials are investigating a growing outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes intestinal illness, after more than 145 people across 17 states became sick in recent weeks.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), all of the reported illnesses involved people who became infected while in the United States. None of the patients reported traveling internationally during the two weeks before becoming sick, leading investigators to believe the illnesses are linked to contaminated food consumed domestically.

The CDC, working alongside the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments, is trying to determine exactly what food item caused the outbreak. At this time, no specific product has been identified.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that spreads when people eat or drink something contaminated. Fresh produce has been linked to several outbreaks in previous years.

People infected with the parasite commonly experience watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite, bloating, weight loss, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Symptoms usually begin about a week after exposure and can last for several weeks if left untreated.

So far, 20 people have been hospitalized, though the CDC says no deaths have been reported.

Health officials recommend washing fresh fruits and vegetables before eating them, practicing good hand hygiene, and contacting a healthcare provider if you develop severe or prolonged diarrhea.

The CDC notes that Cyclospora cases are most common during the spring and summer months, when fresh produce consumption is at its highest. The investigation remains active, and officials say additional cases may be identified as more reports come in.
