WAHNETA, Fla. — A Winter Haven man is facing felony charges after deputies say he used red and blue emergency-style lights on his truck to pull over motorists and move traffic out of his way.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the incident began around 10:27 p.m. on June 9 when a driver called 911 to report a suspicious Chevrolet truck.

The caller told dispatchers that the truck activated red and blue lights, causing him to believe he was being stopped by law enforcement. After the driver pulled over, the truck reportedly continued on without ever making contact.

A Polk County deputy later located the Chevrolet truck on Bomber Road and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as 20-year-old Misael Guerrero-Ramirez of Winter Haven.

During the investigation, deputies discovered red and blue LED lights mounted inside the truck's windshield. According to the Sheriff's Office, Guerrero-Ramirez admitted he would activate the lights on drivers he felt were brake-checking him because it would often cause them to move out of his way.

Deputies arrested Guerrero-Ramirez and transported him to the Sheriff's Processing Center, where he was charged with Impersonation of a Law Enforcement Officer, a third-degree felony.

What Should You Do If You Think a Law Enforcement Officer Isn't Real?

Stories like this often leave drivers wondering what they should do if they're ever unsure whether the person trying to pull them over is actually a law enforcement officer.

Law enforcement agencies recommend staying calm and not panicking. Turn on your hazard lights to show you're acknowledging the vehicle behind you, then drive to a safe, well-lit location such as a gas station, convenience store, or other public area.

If something doesn't seem right, call 911. Dispatchers can often confirm whether a legitimate law enforcement officer is attempting to stop your vehicle.

Keep your doors locked and remain inside your vehicle if you feel unsafe. If necessary, ask the officer for identification and wait for confirmation from dispatch.

Authorities stress that legitimate law enforcement officers understand safety concerns and generally will not have an issue with a driver proceeding to a nearby safe location before stopping.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office also reminds drivers that only authorized emergency vehicles may display red and blue lights, and impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious criminal offense that can carry significant penalties.
