EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA — Residents across portions of east central Florida should keep an eye on the sky this afternoon and evening as forecasters warn of a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Level 1 out of 5 severe weather risk is in place for parts of the region through Thursday evening. The primary threats include isolated damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning strikes, and localized flooding from heavy rainfall.

Forecasters say the greatest risk period will occur between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., with storms developing and moving across portions of the Interstate 4 corridor and the Space Coast.
Some of the stronger storms could produce wind gusts approaching 60 mph, capable of downing small tree limbs and causing minor damage. In addition, heavy downpours may lead to localized flooding, with rainfall rates capable of producing 2 to 3 inches of rain in as little as 60 to 90 minutes in isolated locations.
Meteorologists also note that a brief funnel cloud or waterspout cannot be ruled out, particularly near the coast and adjacent waters.
The risk area includes portions of east central Florida, including communities near Orlando, Daytona Beach, Cape Canaveral, Melbourne, Titusville, Palm Bay, Vero Beach, and surrounding areas.
Officials encourage residents to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings and to move indoors immediately if thunder is heard. Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors.
