MESA, Ariz.  An adult man armed with an ax was shot and killed by a Mesa police officer Monday evening after officers responded to reports of a violent domestic disturbance in a residential neighborhood, authorities said.

According to the Mesa Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 7:09 p.m. on August 3, 2026, to the 3800 block of South Emery Circle, near Raleigh Avenue and Emery Circle, after multiple 911 callers reported an adult male assaulting his ex-wife and children with a shovel outside a residence.

Police said callers also reported the suspect was walking through the neighborhood damaging vehicles with the shovel and may have been armed with both an ax and a firearm.

Before officers arrived, several neighbors reportedly witnessed the confrontation continue down the street and attempted to intervene to protect the victims.

When the first responding officer encountered the suspect, investigators said the man was armed with an ax. The officer gave verbal commands before an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was taken into custody, and officers immediately began lifesaving measures until personnel from the Mesa Fire and Medical Department arrived. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that no family members, witnesses, or officers were injured during the incident. Police also stated there are no outstanding suspects and no ongoing threat to the public.

The officer-involved shooting is now being investigated by the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team (EVCIRT), with the Gilbert Police Department serving as the lead investigative agency.

Questions regarding the officer-involved shooting investigation will be handled by the Gilbert Police Department, while questions related to the initial disturbance call will remain with the Mesa Police Department.

The investigation remains active, and additional information, including the identity of the deceased, is expected to be released as it becomes available.
