When officers arrived, they found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The fire had already spread to a nearby RV, surrounding brush, and portions of the residence.

Authorities said officers immediately rushed toward the home and encountered a distraught man outside who was attempting to re-enter the burning residence because an adult female remained inside.

With heavy smoke filling the home, officers forced entry and searched the residence. They located the woman inside and safely assisted her out of the structure as conditions rapidly worsened.

During the rescue, the male occupant reportedly re-entered the home and initially resisted officers' attempts to lead him to safety. Officers were ultimately able to remove him from the residence without injury.

Officials credited the quick actions of the responding officers with saving both occupants' lives.

"Thanks to the swift and decisive actions of responding officers, both occupants were safely removed from the home and escaped the fire without injury," Mesa Police said in a statement.

Mesa Fire and Medical Department personnel worked alongside Mesa Police during the incident. Investigators later determined the fire was non-suspicious in nature.

No neighboring homes were damaged by the fire.

Several officers who entered the residence were transported to a hospital for evaluation after being exposed to smoke while conducting the rescue. Authorities said no firefighters or members of the public sustained serious injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.
