POINCIANA, FL — While law enforcement remains on high alert following a recent armed confrontation near the Marigold Avenue off-ramp, the Poinciana community spent part of their weekend focusing on a different kind of public safety: cleaning out the medicine cabinet.
This past Saturday, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) joined forces with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and HCA Florida Poinciana Hospital for the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Campaign. The goal was simple: provide a safe, anonymous way for residents to dispose of expired or unwanted medications before they become a danger.
The results speak for themselves. By the end of the day, officials confirmed they had collected nearly 90 pounds of prescription drugs.
A Proactive Approach to Safety
For many, an old bottle of painkillers or expired antibiotics might seem harmless sitting in a drawer. However, local authorities emphasize that these substances are prime targets for misuse or accidental ingestion.
"This effort helps prevent misuse and keeps these substances out of the wrong hands," the Sheriff’s Office stated in a release. By removing these chemicals from local homes, the initiative slashes the risk of residential medication misuse and helps protect the local environment from improper disposal.
Sheriff Christopher A. Blackmon expressed his gratitude to the residents who took the time to stop by the hospital to drop off their items. The success of the event leaned heavily on local collaboration, including the ongoing partnership with Positively Osceola, which helped spread the word to ensure a high turnout.

Events like the Drug Take-Back serve as a vital reminder of the everyday preventative work required to keep neighborhoods secure, even as deputies continue to investigate more urgent threats like the recent armed assault near Poinciana Parkway.
