Suspect Arrested in Violent Bartow Murder Following Intensive Investigation
BARTOW, FL — A suspect is now behind bars following a violent murder at a Bartow apartment complex, with investigators crediting detailed, “old-fashioned” detective work for solving the case.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, 56-year-old Jeffrey Lee Blevins was shot and killed late Thursday night, March 26, 2026, at the Fountain Place Apartments. Detectives say Blevins suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head, and a 9mm shell casing was recovered at the scene.
With no immediate witnesses or surveillance footage pointing to a suspect, detectives began canvassing the area and speaking with residents. During those interviews, investigators learned about David Richard Morris, 48, who had reportedly been aggressive toward other tenants and had a prior confrontation with Blevins before the shooting.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Morris’ apartment, where they discovered key evidence, including a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun in a bedroom closet, along with a towel and clothing that appeared to have blood stains. Authorities say Morris was uncooperative during the search, yelling at detectives and interfering with the investigation, which led to his initial arrest on misdemeanor charges.

While Morris was in custody, forensic investigators tested the recovered firearm. Using the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), they compared shell casings from the weapon to the casing found at the crime scene. The results confirmed a match, identifying the handgun as the murder weapon.
“Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the detectives in the case, a dangerous subject was taken off the streets. While the investigation continues, we are very proud of the work that the officers and detectives have done in this case. We have an excellent, collaborative relationship with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. Together, we are keeping Bartow and Polk County a safe place to live, work, and visit.” Stephen Walker, Police Chief
Based on that evidence, Morris was formally charged on March 28, 2026, with Second Degree Murder without Premeditation (F1) and Discharging a Firearm in a Residential Area (M1), along with additional charges including resisting without violence and interfering with a traffic control device.
During his first appearance hearing on March 29, 2026, Morris was ordered held without bond on the murder charge. He received a $1,000 bond for the firearm discharge and resisting charges, and $250 bonds for each traffic-related charge.
Sheriff Grady Judd praised the work of detectives, stating the case was solved through careful evidence gathering and teamwork between the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and the Bartow Police Department. Bartow Police Chief Stephen Walker also commended the effort, saying the arrest removed a dangerous individual from the community and highlighted the strength of the agencies’ partnership.

Blevins suffered a fatal gunshot injury late Thursday night, March 26, 2026 at the Fountain Place Apartments in Bartow.
“I can’t say it enough, my detectives are the absolute best at what they do, and they proved it again over the weekend. There was no witness and no video that immediately revealed the murderer. This was old-fashioned detective work of following the evidence and leads. It was a great collaborative effort between the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Bartow Police Department.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff
The investigation remains ongoing, with additional forensic testing expected.
