Teen Arrested After Fleeing Officers in Mesa; Drone and Helicopter Lead to Capture
MESA, AZ — An 18-year-old suspect is in custody after attempting to flee from Mesa Police officers late Monday night, with authorities using advanced technology to track him down and recover a loaded firearm.
According to Mesa Police, the incident occurred just before midnight on March 23, 2026, when officers observed several individuals inside Wittman Park after hours, in violation of posted park rules.
As officers activated their emergency lights, 18-year-old Lorenzo Williams immediately fled on foot. Police say Williams was carrying a backpack as he ran toward a fenced alleyway, where he threw the backpack over a wall before climbing the fence and continuing to run.
Drone and Helicopter Track Suspect
Officers deployed Mesa Police’s Drone as First Responder (DFR) to assist in locating the suspect. The drone quickly located Williams and observed him attempting to hide by climbing inside a trash container.
A Mesa Police helicopter also responded, using infrared technology to detect heat coming from inside the container, confirming the suspect’s location.
Officers established a perimeter and took Williams into custody without further incident.
Loaded Handgun Recovered
After the arrest, officers retraced Williams’ path and recovered the discarded backpack. Nearby, they located a loaded handgun, which investigators say had been discarded during the chase.
Williams was booked into jail on several charges, including:
- Possession of a deadly weapon (under 21)
- Possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony
- Possession of marijuana for sale
- Failure to obey a police officer
- Trespassing
Mesa Police say the case highlights how technology like drones and aerial support is playing an increasing role in quickly locating suspects and ensuring officer safety.
