FHP: Passenger Killed After SUV Loses Control and Overturns on U.S. 1 in Brevard County

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A late-night crash along U.S. 1 in Brevard County turned deadly Saturday night after a sport utility vehicle lost control, crossed multiple medians, and overturned, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 11:29 p.m. on December 13, 2025, near the intersection of U.S. 1 and Valkaria Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), a 2014 Hyundai Tucson was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 in the outside lane when the vehicle veered left and struck a raised, curbed median. Troopers say the impact caused the SUV’s left front tire to come off the rim, making it difficult for the driver to maintain control.

The vehicle continued northwest across the grass median and entered the southbound inside lane. FHP reports the driver attempted to correct the vehicle and re-enter the northbound lanes but was unable to do so. The SUV then struck another raised grass median and a plastic pole before hitting the edge of the pavement and beginning to overturn.

During the rollover, the 27-year-old male passenger was ejected from the vehicle, troopers said.

Both occupants were transported to Palm Bay Hospital. The passenger, a Palm Bay resident, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Palm Bay, suffered minor injuries.

Investigators noted the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The passenger was not wearing a seatbelt, according to FHP. Next of kin for the passenger have been notified.

The crash remains under investigation as troopers work to determine the factors that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. FHP continues to remind drivers of the importance of wearing seatbelts, especially during high-speed and late-night travel.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
